A tapered bore brass instrument which achieves chromatiscism through the use of valves. Pitch is achieved by encouraging the instrument's body to vibrate at a specific partial (harmonic) through the vibration of the players lips. This effect creates the bright sound of the trumpet as only one, or relatively few, partials are sounded creating a bright, thin sound where a string instrument produces many partials that produce a full and dark sound.
