[edit] Creating new pages
To create a new page, you can do one of the following:
- If you see a red link, click on it, and you will be able to create it.
- If you want to create a new page that currently has no links to it, type the page name into the search box and click 'go'. If the page does not already exist, the results page should show a red link to that page, at which point you can follow 1.
- Remember to read all of this page before you edit articles.
[edit] Editing existing pages
- Click the edit page tab
- Make changes to the text in the edit box. Make sure you write clearly and concisely, and make sure your edit does something to improve the page. If you're making normal changes to the text like fixing spelling mistakes or grammar, inserting new sentences, etc, then you don't have to worry too much about formatting. When you do need to use some type of formatting, you do it using wiki syntax, see Help:Formatting for some of the common types of formatting used.
- Optionally, enter a short note in the Summary box describing your changes.
- Optionally preview your changes with the Preview button.
- Click the Save page button.
- One can rename pages as well See Help:Moving_a_page
[edit] Discussion
Every article has its own discussion page where you can ask questions, make suggestions, or discuss corrections. Click the discussion page tab to reach it. You can sign your message by writing 4 tildes (~~~~). The wikisoftware turns them into the current time and your username or your current IP address if you are not logged in.
[edit] Creating your own project body on YouWiki
Great! You want to put your project on YouWiki! You can start off by creating your own category for you project. Don't forget to surf around YouWiki first to check if similar pages/categories already exist, and you can get some ideas from others. You can build on and integrate with pre-existing articles by adding subcategories and pages within other categories. Remember not to create categories that are synonymous with pre-existing categories!
[edit] An example
I am interested in rockets and want to make a category about it.
- I do some background searching and find that the category 'Rockets' exists.
- I quickly look at some of the articles in this category and find that I could add a page about Solid Propulsion, since it doesn't exist yet.
- The category 'Propulsion Systems' does exist, and I thus create my new article with the tag
[[Category:Propulsion Systems]]
at the end. I may also like to include the tag
[[Category:Rockets]]
if the article is of utmost relevance to the 'Rockets' topic as a whole.
[edit] Stubs
Stubs are created to express your interest in a topic, even if you don't have the time or experience to expand on its content. Bear in mind that a stub should provide a solid basis for another user to build on, and shouldn't be just a heading with I want this page now please! written underneath it.
[edit] Citing sources
When you make content on YouWiki that isn't your own work, you need to cite your sources
[edit] Non-project pages
If you want to type an article that is humorous/interesting/etc but isn't strictly following the strictest goals of YouWiki, you should mark it with the {{junk}} tag at the top of the page. You may also wish to include a description/explanation, like this: {{junk|This article isn't really junk, but an interesting thing about Zombies}}
